If You Were to Die Tonight, Would You Go to Heaven?
That's a pretty serious question, one that a lot of people don't even think about. They just assume that if they live a good life, don't murder anyone, or steal anything that they'll go to heaven when they die because they haven't sinned. However, the Bible states that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). In all of history there has only been one person who has lived a sinless life: our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Penalty For Sin: Death
Though our God loves us and cares for us, he cannot abide by our sinful nature. Because of that sinful nature, we must pay wages, or a penalty, for that sin. The penalty of sin is death. (Romans 6:23)
The Good News and the Gift of God
Though the penalty of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). You see, God loved the world so much, that He gave His only Son to take away the sins of the world, and that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life! (John 3:16) The Holy Son of God stepped down from Heaven to become a man and took the penalty (death) for us all. However, like all gifts, you must choose to accept it.
But Aren't There Other Ways to Get to Heaven?
While some may tell you living a good life or doing good deeds will get you in to Heaven, the Bible is very clear on this matter. Jesus told his disciples "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6) And while everyone should try and do good things, it is only by the Grace of God that you can be saved from death, not of yourself or of your good works (Ephesians 2:8-9). So then, how do you get to Heaven?
The ABCs of Salvation
The ABCs...it seems so simplistic, doesn't it? That's the best part. Obtaining salvation is as easy as ABC.
- Admit that you are a sinner. That seems to be the first step for a lot of things: admitting there's a problem. In this case, the problem is sin. Remember Romans 3:23? For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We're all sinners. Because of this, you must repent (or turn away) from your sin and turn to God. And remember, just because you've repented doesn't mean you won't sin again. Now you'll just be more aware of what sin is and can better avoid it.
- Believe in Jesus Christ as God's Son and accept His gift of salvation. Remember, though we've done nothing to deserve eternal life, Jesus paid the wages of sin for us so that we might one day spend eternity with Him in Heaven. Jesus wants to give you the gift of eternal life, all you have to do is ask. When you call on Jesus to save you, you become a new person. The old you passes away and new a creation is left in its place (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- Confess your faith in Jesus as your Savior and Lord. Now that you've admitted that you're a sinner and accepted the gift of eternal life by believing in Jesus Christ, it's time to tell someone. The best person to tell is the pastor at your local church. They'll be best equipped to guide you on your journey as a new Christian.
Are You Ready to Accept Your Free Gift?
If you are ready to admit, believe, and confess, then we invite you to pray this simple prayer. You don't have to kneel, close your eyes, or anything like that. All that is required is that you are sincere as you call out to God to save you.
"Lord Jesus, thank you that you love me. Lord, I know that I’m a sinner and you’re the only Savior. Lord, I repent of my sin. I turn from my sin by the help of your spirit. Lord, I believe that you died on the cross. You have paid my sin debt, and Lord, I believe that you rose from the dead and you are alive. Lord, I receive you right now. Please, Lord Jesus, come into my life and save me, wash me and cleanse me, and help me to live for you for the rest of my life. When I die, take me to heaven to live for you forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
If you sincerely prayed that prayer then you have followed the ABCs of salvation and are now a Christian. God has saved you and your sins are now covered by the blood of Jesus Christ. You can't hear it, but the angels in Heaven are rejoicing, and we would love to rejoice with you as well! We thank God for what He has just done in your life, and we'd like to hear from you. A member of our staff will get in touch with you and answer any questions you may have about your decision to accept Jesus as your savior.
